With design details reminiscent of the legendary 1969 model, the 2012 Chevrolet Camaro combines the spirit of the classic American muscle car with fuel efficiency, safety, handling, technology and build quality expected in an actual performance coupe.

The Camaro is available in three trim levels: LS, LT and SS. The LS and LT are powered by a 323-hp direct-injected 3.6-liter V6 with a six-speed manual transmission or an optional six-speed automatic transmission. SS 6.2-liter V8 generates 426 horsepower with the standard six-speed manual and 400 horsepower with the optional six-speed automatic with sequential shift control. Standard equipment on all Camaros includes independent rear suspension, StabiliTrak stability control with traction control, six airbags, air conditioning, OnStar and SiriusXM Satellite Radio. The LT adds fog lights, tires, 18 inch alloys and electric seats, while the SS features unique front fascia, sport suspension, Brembo brakes and a limited slip differential. The available RS Package includes 20-inch tires with aluminum high-performance tires, distinctive high-intensity headlights with a "halo" screen. Optional equipment includes Bluetooth wireless connectivity, power sunroof, performance tires, Boston Acoustics sound system and a variety of packages outer band.

By 2012, the power of the 3.6-liter V6 review is beaten 312-323. The new FE4 suspension debuts as a performance enhancement for the SS coupe, focuses on a more refined. The rear lights that had been part of the RS appearance package in 2011 and a rear spoiler is now standard on all trims. A new package adds a rear view camera system and a rearview auto-dimming mirrors for the existing rear parking assist feature. Interior changes include an appearance revised instrument panel, new instrument graphics and trim, and a new steering wheel design and a power function of elevation for the front passenger seat. The 45th anniversary package will be offered in the Camaro's top two trim levels (2LT and 2SS) for convertible coupe body styles and, including single and striped bell housing, new design 20-inch dark silver color, 45th Anniversary embroidery and badges, and red, white and blue stitching.

Here are some of the highlights:

• The LSA supercharged 6.2-liter V8 will deliver 580 hp and 556 lb-ft of torque on premium fuel. It will connect with a Tremec six-speed manual transmission as standard, while a Hydra-Matic six-speed automatic will be optional.
 • The Camaro ZL1 is longer and wider than the current Shelby Mustang GT500 and weighs in at 4,120 pounds.
 • The ZL1 gets an aluminum hood with carbon-fiber "Mohawk" insert, which GM says needs to be cared for carefully.
 • The lighting package will be unique and will include dual fog lamps, separate daytime running lights and HID headlights with halo rings. A lower splitter will reduce lift while the larger and lower front grille opening will provide more cooling power.
 • GM also notes that the Camaro ZL1 sits lower than the Camaro SS, so buyers will need to be careful around high curbs.
 • For wheel packages, the ZL1 offers two 20-inch options, a 10-spoke and a five-spoke wheel. Both measure 10 inches wide in front and 11 inches in back. The five-spoke set has a polished face with a high-gloss clearcoat. The Goodyear Eagle F1 Supercar G2 tires come with an extra bit of rubber overhanging the rim to prevent damage on curbs.
 • The ZL1 will have a head-up display. Shift lights are included, as are a lateral g meter that holds the value to give you a chance to look before the next corner. A gear indicator is available on cars that have automatic transmissions.
 • In addition to the Magnetic Ride Control that is also used in the Cadillac CTS-V and the Chevrolet Corvette, the ZL1 also will get Performance Track Management. PTM features five modes ranging from wet with a touring suspension setup to race mode with track suspension stiffness. Brembo brakes will bring everything to a halt.
 • Buyers have a choice of nine colors.
 • The Camaro ZL1 coupe will arrive at dealerships early next year with a price expected to fall in the low-$50,000 range.
