kikimiqbalsoft - ‘Conventional crimes’  to be focus of Jakarta  Police chief - Recently sworn in Jakarta Police chief Insp. Gen. Dwi Priyatno says that he will focus on “conventional crimes” in the capital while maintaining the force’s existing vision.

Priyatno was inaugurated Tuesday, replacing Insp. Gen. Putut Eko Bayuseno, in a handing-off ceremony at the National Police in South Jakarta.

During the inauguration, Putut was named the new head of the National Police Security Maintenance Agency.

Priyatno’s previous position as Central Java Police chief was handed to former West Sumatra Police chief Brig. Gen. Noer Ali.

Priyatno said he had been briefed by his staff about the criminal trends in Jakarta.

“There seems to be a rise in the number of conventional crimes [kidnapping, murder] and drug cases in this city. The police will require the assistance of the public in order to tackle these crimes,” the Purbalingga-born police head told reporters on Tuesday.

He added that a more comprehensive handling of drug cases would be one of his priorities due to the fact that it was a nationwide problem.

Priyatno himself was not a relatively outstanding figure in the police force, said Indonesia Police Watch (IPW) head Neta S. Pane. But Priyatno, Neta said, had cultivated a reliable reputation as the Central Java Police chief, where he served from 2013, and improved the esteem of the police in the region.

“As a result of his leadership, the Central Java Police has managed to make the region a very safe and clean one. It may be attributed to his blusukan [impromptu visits], where he would directly collaborate with district precincts and develop better cooperation with the central command,” Neta told The Jakarta Post on Monday.

Neta added that while Priyatno remained a relatively unknown figure, his positive reputation as head of the Central Java Police may serve as an example of his capabilities as a leader.

The 54-year-old has had a long and varied career within the National Police, including stints as deputy police chief in the Ponorogo and Sidoarjo precincts in East Java; chief of the Traffic Police Unit in West Kalimantan; and a liaison officer for the Malaysian branch of Interpol. He speaks Dutch, English and Javanese.

The inauguration of a new Jakarta Police chief comes three weeks before the April 9 election and according to the police, it will fill the vacuum left by Comr. Gen. Badrodin Haiti, who was promoted from head of the National Police Security Maintenance Agency to deputy chief of the National Police.

Priyatno’s predecessor, Putut, now steps into the vacancy left by Badrodin.

“Dwi Priyatno was chosen as the new Jakarta Police chief due to his experience and familiarity as head of a regional police force and his favorable reputation as a leader,” said National Police spokesman Ronnie Sompie on Tuesday.

Criminologist at the University of Indonesia (UI) Bambang Widodo Umar hoped that Priyatno would bring changes to the way the police handled criminal cases.

“I can only hope that the new head of police will not continue the habit of looking at criminal cases from a technical point of view. I hope that under his leadership, the police will focus more on understanding why a certain crime has occurred, therefore, reviewing its context enough so that the core of the issue is tackled,” Bambang told the Post on Tuesday  --
