Indonesia The automotive industry in January 2023 saw a shift in the best-selling car brands. While Suzuki and Mitsubishi have been dominating the market for a while, Hyundai is slowly but surely catching up.
According to the latest data from the Association of Indonesian Automotive Manufacturers (Gaikindo), Suzuki remains at the top spot with 30,232 units sold in January 2023. However, this figure is down by 6.1% from the same month last year. Meanwhile, Mitsubishi sits in second place with 17,947 units sold, experiencing a 9.6% decrease from the previous year.
On the other hand, Hyundai is quickly closing in on its competitors with 15,985 units sold in January, a significant increase of 21.3% compared to January 2022. This impressive performance catapults the Korean carmaker to third place, overtaking Toyota and Daihatsu.
The surge in Hyundai's sales can be attributed to the success of its SUV lineup, particularly the Creta and Tucson models. These two vehicles have been well-received by Indonesian consumers, thanks to their sleek design, reliable performance, and affordable price tags.
As for Suzuki, the brand's popular models such as the Ertiga and XL7 continue to attract buyers, despite the overall decline in sales. Mitsubishi, on the other hand, has been struggling due to the shortage of chips and other components, resulting in production delays and fewer available units.
